houston, April 22, 2024 (Globe Newswire) — Technology group Wärtsilä top projects Awarded the Energy Innovation Category of the Environment + Energy Leadership Award Program for its leadership and participation. AJ Meme Hydrogen fuel testing in power plants.

Wärtsilä, in cooperation with the WEC Energy Group, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Burns & McDonnell to conduct hydrogen fuel demonstration project at WEC AJ Mim Power Plant.Tests completed in October 2022This is the world’s first hydrogen power test of a utility-scale grid-connected reciprocating engine generator, and the largest internal combustion engine ever to operate continuously on mixed hydrogen fuel. The project, which incorporates 25% hydrogen fuel by volume, was implemented to support the WEC’s goal of reducing carbon emissions from power-generating vehicles by 60% by the end of 2025. 80% reduction from 2005 levels by the end of 2030. The project was also undertaken to demonstrate that internal combustion engine power plants play a key role in stabilizing the amount of intermittent renewable energy used to generate electricity.

Hydrogen fuel tests were conducted using an unmodified 18 MW Wärtsilä 18V50SG gas-fired reciprocating engine. Stakeholders tested fuel mixtures of up to 25 vol.% hydrogen and natural gas to demonstrate the plant’s ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining reliability. During the test period, the Wärtsilä 50SG engine continued to power the grid, achieving 95% load with a 25 vol% hydrogen mix, increasing engine efficiency by up to 0.75% at lower loads and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Reduced by 9.1%. Stay compliant with NOx emissions. Further testing showed that 100% engine load could be achieved with a 17 vol% H2 blend.

“This recognition is earth day This underlines Wärtsilä’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and working towards a 100% renewable energy future. This demonstrates that utilities can convert existing gas power plants to run on cleaner, more sustainable fuels, thereby reducing carbon emissions and helping energy companies deliver reliable and affordable energy. This will serve as a bridge to continue providing services.” John RodriguezEnergy Business Director, Wärtsilä North America.

In Part 12th In the award program’s first year of operation, Environment+Energy Leader’s anonymous judging process involves a panel of industry executives working in the energy and environment sectors. Entries will be scored on a numerical basis by summing the judges’ scores.

The AJ Mim power plant’s hydrogen fuel pilot project caught the attention of the jury for its exceptional contribution to energy innovation, setting a benchmark for innovation and sustainability in its category.

The judges’ awards include:

“This project embodies innovation, practicality and environmental consciousness and sets a precedent for a greener energy environment.”

“Wärtsilä’s work paves the way to a more sustainable energy environment where innovation, safety and compliance intersect. This project advances hydrogen technology and the feasibility of integrating hydrogen into existing power plants. I emphasize that.

“The data presented are important because they investigate highly concentrated H2 mixtures, consider emissions quantification, and use unmodified engines. The last of these criteria is the most important. .Additional points or consideration of engine load compatibility at different gas mixture levels.

“Rather than theorizing about how interesting something is, actual testing and retesting to get concrete data is appreciated. Experimenting with unmodified equipment is daring. , others will be less likely to resist change.”

“This is a good way to convert existing fossil fuel power generation to low-carbon or no-carbon options.”

“Great project. We need to do this. The impact of the pilot is to prepare us for expansion. Impressive efficiency gains. Not a silver bullet, but use this as a quick migration of existing infrastructure. Hopefully, we can play an important role.”

Wärtsilä plans to continue pilot testing engines using hydrogen mixtures until 2024 and is currently developing an engine and power plant concept that runs on 100% pure hydrogen, expected to be available in 2026.
