ASTANA – The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has started the Year of the Environment under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Aybek Sumadyarov said at a press conference on January 15, the ministry’s press service reported.
In July, SCO member states unanimously supported Kazakhstan’s initiative to declare 2024 as the Year of the Environment. A corresponding event plan was adopted in his October.
“We consider the initiatives launched by the Kazakh Presidency to be an important contribution of the organization to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We will promote recruitment,” Smadiyarov said.
In 2024, Kazakhstan will assume the SCO chairmanship. In line with Kazakhstan’s recommendations, the Year of the Environment will feature thematic events at educational institutions and individual initiatives organized by the SCO Secretariat.
Environmental organizations will hold nearly 20 joint events on various themes related to World Environment Day, World Water Day, International Day of Biodiversity and International Day of Forests.
In 2024, in addition to the SCO, Turkey will chair several other international organizations, including the Organization of Turkish States and the Asian Conference on Exchange and Confidence-Building Measures.
