Officials on the popular tropical island of Holbox are finalizing details of a new environmental tax that will be levied on all visitors starting this year.

The move is part of a broader effort to protect the island’s delicate ecosystem.

Holbox has rapidly grown in popularity among travelers over the past few years, with many of the destination’s unique attractions quickly going viral on social media.

A hotspot for nature travelers and backpackers, Holbox is becoming increasingly attractive to mass tourism. Currently, this island is one of the most popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, thanks to its beautiful pristine beaches and crystal clear waters.

@tomhartrey And this was all due to one rainstorm the day I arrived. 🇲🇽 The beaches and restaurants on Isla Holbox were amazing and the sun was out most of the time we were there. ☀️ But lo and behold, the water didn’t go anywhere. • #instavsreality #honestreview #mexico #islaholbox #flood #rainyseason #minivlog ♬ Push Up (Original Mix) – Creeds

Holbox to start charging new taxes to tourists amid environmental and pollution concerns

Isla Holbox, located along Mexico’s northern Caribbean coast, is a small but very popular island. Just 42 kilometers long and just 2 kilometers wide, this small island offers some of the best natural beauty in the region.

As its popularity soars among tourists, authorities are concerned about the island’s sensitive nature. Home to flamingos, tropical birds and a wealth of marine life, Holbox is a premier natural destination.

However, the rapid increase in the number of arrivals to the island has increased environmental threats to the unique flora and fauna of the place. And with limited infrastructure, authorities have struggled to mitigate the impact of growing travel popularity.

So authorities revealed this week that tourists will soon have to pay an environmental tax when visiting remote islands.

This year, a tax of 30 Mexican pesos (approximately $1.75) will be applied to all visitors to the island.

No official timeline has been announced for the implementation of the new system, but authorities say the tax could be imposed as early as this spring.

Although the tax is a small fee among other much larger expenses, officials say the huge number of visitors to the island contributes to the cost of infrastructure development.

Local officials say the new tax is likely to be automatically added to the price of ferry transfers to Holbox. This popular tropical island can only be accessed by ferry, with numerous daily departures from the port city of Chiquila.

Isla Holbox has grappled with issues such as flooding, poor sewage systems and power outages, all of which may have contributed to the island’s record popularity. Local authorities have already received funding to improve the island’s tourist capacity, but more needs to be done.

This is especially true given the impending opening of the new Maya Train rail system, which is expected to have a significant impact on Quintana Roo’s visitor numbers.

Thousands of travelers have canceled hotel reservations in Holbox this winter due to flooding. Images and videos of flooded roads went viral, prompting visitors to choose destinations on other islands, including Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.

Despite heavy rain and concerns about wastewater management, Holbox is gearing up for a record summer. Famous for its white sand beaches and small boutique hotels, Holbox is an ideal destination for those seeking adventure far from all-inclusive facilities.

Cancun travelers who want to visit Holbox can book guided tours from the coastal hotspot. Alternatively, travelers can arrive at Chiquila with her ADO bus company and then take the ferry to Holbox, where he can purchase tickets for about $15 per person.
