The Botswana Women in Mining Conference was held in Gaborone on 1st and 2nd November. During the conference, women who have made significant contributions to the mining industry came together to share their experiences and insights.

This year, organizers of the Women in Mining event introduced the inaugural “Women in Mining Game Changer Awards.” This award aims to celebrate and showcase the hidden and immense talent of women who are making waves in this field. To celebrate their achievements, organizers encouraged the public to nominate individuals who have had a transformative impact in the field. Categories include:

● Excellent operator/trade/technician

● Outstanding women in Botswana’s mining industry

● Technology and innovation

● Champion of gender, diversity and inclusion

New talent in Botswana’s mines

● Excellence in health, safety and environment

● Excellent support service

● Excellent mentorship

Digby Wells Environment Country Manager Letty Pitragano received the Excellence Award in the Health, Safety and Environment category. Lettie boasts over 20 years of experience in environmental/sustainability management.

Her expertise includes environmental impact assessment, environmental management planning, strategic environmental assessment, environmental management system implementation and auditing (ISO14001:2015), environmental compliance monitoring, legal compliance auditing, biodiversity management, and ensuring the implementation of international standards. It covers a wide range of aspects, including (toward a sustainable society). mining, IFC), social impact assessment, and social performance research including stakeholder planning and engagement.

Additionally, Lettie is a certified internal lead auditor and environmental assessment practitioner.
