NNSA releases final Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory site-wide environmental impact report

WASHINGTON, DC — The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration has announced the Notice of Availability (NOA) for the site-wide Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the continued operations of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL SWEIS). NOA he was published in the Federal Register on November 3rd.

The final LLNL SWEIS analyzes the potential environmental impacts of two reasonable alternatives for continuing LLNL operations for approximately the next 15 years.

“In carrying out our national security mission, NNSA is committed to stewardship of the environment,” said NNSA Administrator Jill Hruby. “Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is critical to NNSA’s stockpile management program, global nuclear threat mitigation, and many other important missions ranging from nuclear security to climate change. This environmental analysis will help us will be able to continue important laboratory operations that support these missions for many years to come.”

The final LLNL SWEIS analyzes the no-action alternative and the proposed action. The no-action alternative provides a benchmark for comparing the environmental impacts of other alternatives that support the assigned mission without any foreseeable new operations or facilities for the next 15 years. Current LLNL operations of the program will continue. The proposed actions would address aging infrastructure concerns and include the projects, activities, and facilities described in the no-action alternative, as well as the construction of new facilities, renovations of existing facilities, operational changes, and replacement of surplus facilities. Includes decontamination, decommissioning, and demolition. .

The final LLNL SWEIS was posted on the NNSA NEPA Reading Room webpage on November 3, 2023. The Department plans to issue a final Record of Decision (ROD) under the LLNL SWEIS on or after December 3, 2023.
