Matthew Poppen will serve as the Maricopa Association of Governments’ environmental director, moving from the interim director position he has held since January.

“This decision reflects Matt’s leadership abilities and his dedication to the environment and public health,” said MAG Executive Director Ed Zurcher.

“Matt brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position. During his time as Interim Director, he has fostered collaboration and tackled head-on the environmental challenges facing our region, particularly air quality. Ta.”

Poppen began his career at MAG in 2010. As a senior air quality specialist, he has consulted with federal, state, and local agencies to develop regional air quality plans to achieve and maintain federal national air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter. , according to a MAG release.

He also has “extensive experience in air quality modeling, management measures, transportation compatibility, and emissions inventory analysis,” the release states.

Mr. Poppen previously worked as an air quality inspector and planner for the Maricopa County Air Quality Department. He received his bachelor’s degree from Pacific University in Fresno and a master’s degree in urban and environmental planning from Arizona State University.
