EGLE increases number of projects (88) and brownfield funding ($31.3 million) in FY2023



The numbers have been released and in the 2023 financial year (FY) EGLE awarded more funding to more brownfield redevelopment projects compared to the previous year. Overall, EGLE awarded $31.3 million in brownfield incentives. The funds went to 88 projects in 49 communities around Michigan.

The breakdown is as follows:

Brownfield Redevelopment Grants and Loans

  • Projects: 28
  • Total grant amount: $14,306,672
  • Total loan amount: $4,310,000
  • Number of new jobs: 1,355
  • Private investment: $1,102,334,510

Brownfield Redevelopment Financing Act (Act 381) Project

  • Projects: 11
  • Total tax increment financing approved: $11,055,309
  • Number of new jobs: 87
  • Private investment: $224,244,301

Brownfield site evaluation

  • Number of sites: 51
  • Number of communities: 26
  • Total brownfield evaluation funding: $1,915,559

In 2023, two projects were able to utilize EGLE’s brownfields program for both site evaluation and grant funding. EGLE brownfield incentives encourage the redevelopment of contaminated land, helping to create new jobs and clean up the environment. More than half of EGLE’s annual budget supports local projects, protects public health and the environment, and contributes to economic growth and job creation for Michigan workers. Redevelopment increases the value of brownfield sites and other nearby properties.
