Work history: Fredericks worked as an attorney and served as a senior advisor to the Secretary of Labor at the state and federal levels. Prior to his appointment to the new department, he held senior positions at the Department of Environment and Energy, the Attorney General’s Department, the Ministry of Finance, and the Solomon Islands Ministry of Finance (on secondment from APS). He was appointed head of what was then known as the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources (DISR) in his 2020 year. He was appointed Director of the DCCEEW following the 2022 regime change mechanism by the Albanian government.

Why has he been in the news this past year?: A review of Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) workplace culture by former Australian Swimming CEO Lee Russell found examples of routine sexism, bullying and sexual harassment. Mr Fredericks said the findings were “disappointing”. He said his department is committed to “continuous cultural reform and increased accountability, consistent with the positive culture and practices we are building across DCCEEW.”
