Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is conducting research on new potentially more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to recycle lithium batteries.

“Research results show that this new method can achieve higher lithium recovery rates, reduce the use of valuable resources and reduce the amount of waste generated,” BRIN’s Mining Technology Research Center researcher Eric Prasetillo said in a statement received from him. Thursday office.

Prasetyo said the new method includes the use of selective extraction to separate lithium from other metals, the use of environmentally friendly solvents such as water, and the use of solid-phase extraction techniques to increase lithium concentrations. It is included.

Mr Placetillo explained that lithium separation and purification is considered the latest development in battery recycling technology.

He emphasized that currently, the recovery rate of lithium in battery recycling processes is still low and does not meet the requirements as a precursor for battery cathode production. The recycling process also wastes water and chemicals and produces hazardous waste.

This new method, which is still in the development stage, therefore has the potential to improve the efficiency and sustainability of lithium battery recycling and also meet the growing demand for lithium, he said.

“Currently, the contribution of recycling to global lithium production remains very small,” he said.

Prasetyo detailed three important reasons to recycle lithium. He explained that firstly, since lithium is a limited natural resource, recycling helps conserve natural resources and therefore reduces the need for new lithium mining.

Second, lithium batteries contain hazardous materials that can pollute the environment if not managed properly, so recycling can reduce their impact on the environment.

“Finally, recycling also increases energy security by expanding the supply of lithium for overall battery production,” he said.
